Partners and Education

As a teaching hospital, VA Puget Sound provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.

Academic Partners

VA Puget Sound is primarily affiliated with the University of Washington Medical Center* and also maintains affiliations with over 50 other educational institutions. Each year, we train hundreds of medical residents and allied health professionals each year in audiology and speech pathology, dietetics, HRS&D, radiology, optometry, podiatry, occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreation therapy, psychology, health information management, information technology, medical informatics and other health care programs. Additionally, we train between 15-20 dental residents each year. We are also affiliated with several nursing schools, annually hosting over 500 nursing-auxiliary students and over 300 nursing-professional students.

Each year, VA Puget Sound funds over 700 medical and dental resident slots. Training is also provided to over 100 nursing and associated health trainees.

Veterans Service Organizations

VA Puget Sound maintains a good working relationship with all of our Veteran service organization (VSO) partners. We regularly brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting Veterans' health care.

A Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) has been established which includes stakeholders from a number of Veterans groups. The VAC meets quarterly.

US Department of Defense

As a participant in the US Department of Defense TRICARE Program*, VA Puget Sound serves as the main referral source for women's health and orthopedic specialty appointments. Also, inpatient medical care is provided to Veterans in the South Sound via a sharing agreement with Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis.

Fisher House

The Seattle division of VA Puget Sound is also home to the Fisher House. VA Puget Sound Fisher House* provides a "home away from home" for Veterans and their family members who live great distances from our facilities while the Veteran receives long-term care. Lodging at Fisher House is free for the families.
