The MOVE! Program is designed for veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system who want assistance with managing their weight. Typically, the program is offered to veterans who are overweight or obese with BMI above 30. BMI Calculator*

MOVE! Program used: TeleMOVE! Weight Management Program

The Story: William Benedict has struggled with weight his entire life. He even underwent gastric bypass surgery about 25 years ago. This surgery was initially successful; he went from 340 pounds to 240 pounds but regained all of that weight plus some within a few years after the surgery.

"I had accepted that I was big and didn’t believe it was possible to stay thin. I dreaded going to the doctor because I knew he would tell me to lose weight, but in December 2011, I was referred by my Primary Care Doctor to the TeleMOVE! program. I didn’t expect it to work but decided to give it a try," Benedict said.

Benedict has found the support of the program to be extremely helpful and appreciates weighing daily in order to stay on top of his weight. He has not only seen dramatic weight loss but improvements in his cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels and blood pressure readings. He has also been able to get off many of his medications, and hasnoticed a huge decrease in his back pain and is dramatically more active now than he has ever been.

"I feel like I’m in my 40’s not in my 60’s, I am able to do a lot of things that I had stopped doing because of my size; like walking and riding my bike. I can do whatever I want now," Benedict said.

What was the most helpful? "The constant support from the TeleMOVE! monitor and my Care Coordinator."

What he wants you to know: "If it can work for me, it can work for anybody. You just have to want it, the support is there."
